Pancho Barnes (1901 – 1975) is one of the 20th century’s great American characters and the ‘mother’ of Edwards Air Force Base.  She was an accomplished aviatrix and owner of the Happy Bottom Riding Club which served as a second home for test pilots with the ‘Right Stuff.’

In 1930, she broke Amelia Earhart's air speed record. Barnes raced in the Women's Air Derby and was a member of the Ninety-Nines
